I went to a rally in my town today.  There were over 1000 people.  I’ve never seen anything like that in my town.  The most hopeful thing I saw – a series of speeches by young black high-schoolers talking about their own experiences and calling for systemic change.  Practical, focused and full of expectations.  The rallying cry at the end was a long-time NAACP organizer who said “we’re done dying”.  The pain was there, but so was the hope and determination.  This was just one rally on one day in one town in America….Most of all, I’m appreciating the difference leadership makes:  the absence of it in the white house, the presence of it in the high schoolers who rallied the crowd in my town, and the audaciousness of Shebbra showing Thirteenth at the AICPA.  No question that act, and all of the leadership she has provided along the way, laid the groundwork for the over 40 people participating in a discussion, and seeing white people taking some measure of responsibility, and black people being willing to share their experiences.  You don’t get the outpouring without out the patient, lonely, exhausting leadership that paves the way. So, I want to thank Shebbra for that leadership, inspiring even me, someone who views himself as progressive, but cynical and a bit demoralized in my own way.
